Use a router and a software firewall to protect your data. Be sure to chop up your hard drive into more than one partition so you will not lose data when you reinstall Windows. Microsoft operating systems like to be reinstalled from time to time to speed them up. Try to avoid a lot of installing & uninstalling of unknown software. This will slow your Windows machine down as the Registry gets cluttered up with junk. I need to find a good registry fixer & defragmenter.
